 Age ranges: Student grade-level is based on the grade completed at the end of the 2025-26 school year. Any age exception requests must be made in advance by emailing Dan Hull at [email protected].

Supervision: If they did not drive themselves, students must have a responsible adult on the premises at all times.

Chess sets will be provided. However, clocks are limited and required for the rated section. If you have a clock, bring one. 

Non-elimination All students play all rounds. Losing a round does not eliminate you from the tournament. In the case of an emergency or special circumstances, please inform the tournament director of volunteer of withdrawal. Do not leave without letting us know. 

Unrated Quads Students will be paired in groups of 4 and play a round robin where every player plays each other once. The winner of the group gets a trophy after the last game is completed. Winners are determined based on who receives the highest score. Wins are worth 1 point, draws are worth .5 points, and losses 0. In the event of a tie, the Sonneborn-Berger system will determine the winner, which basically sums the scores of your opponents. The time control is g/20 d/5, which means players get 20 minutes each to make all of their moves with a 5 second count down at the beginning of each turn before the clock starts. While these Quads could take as long as 2.5 hours, most will finish in 1.5 hours or less. In the event of odd numbers, the remaining students will be placed in a small Swiss style tournament.
